The 2010 Dare to Dream Conference was held June 13-15 at the Sioux Falls Ramkota Conference Center. The planning committee organized and delivered another successful conference for families of children with disabilities and self-advocates. The evaluations indicate that the participants enjoyed the keynote speakers, breakout sessions and the many activities. Families also indicated an appreciation for the child/youth respite care that allowed them to participate in learning activities.
The change in city location provided for an increased attendance from 140 in 2008 to 202 adults in 2010. There were 47 children and youth in attendance in 2008 and 55 children and youth at the 2010 conference. Approximately 40% of the participants were self-advocates. This mix of families and self-advocates was noted on evaluations as a positive learning experience for all.
Keynote speakers included Michael Smull, Janice Fialka and Micah Fialka Feldman. The conference participants indicated that they enjoyed the speakers and breakout sessions. Of particular note was having Michael Smull as many self-advocates have participated in training with him and understand the "Important To/Important For" tool used in life planning. Micah was also a great hit with the young people by showing the possibilities for post secondary education and self direction.
The Art Show was an outstanding success and provided the participating artists the opportunity to exhibit their work in a professional setting. The Art Show was open to the public as well as conference participants. This Art Show has become a highlight of the conference for all participants.
The gubernatorial candidate forum provided participants the opportunity to learn about the positions and ideas of candidates, Dennis Daugaard and Scott Heidepriem. The Dare to Dream Conference was their first public appearance on the same stage. The League of Women Voters assisted with the forum by providing a moderator
