What Is a South Dakota Parent Connection Volunteer Parent Trainer?

A VPT (Volunteer Parent Trainer) is a parent or family member of a child with disabilities who has participated in a training conducted by SDPC. A VPT acts as a representative of SDPC in their local community.

What Do South Dakota Parent Connection Volunteer Parent Trainers Do?

VPT's provide training, support and/or information to other parents in their local communities and assist them with problem solving. Following are example ways VPT's assist other parents:

Provide emotional support to parents by listening to them sharing experiences in raising a child who has a disability.
Provide information to parents on rights and responsibilities involved in the special education process.
Conduct workshops for parents to inform them about laws I.E.P. process, communication skills, coping and grieving,
available resources, etc.
Refer parents to other appropriate agencies or providers in their community for support and information.
